Privacy Issue : BIOS Password and
Protect Your Files
This month we are gonna give
our spotlight on how to protect your information and privacy issue for
personal computer.
Many readers
often asks how to protect a file or how to shield a particular folder from
outsiders. What will you do if you don't wan't another person to have access
to a particular folder which has personal piece of information.
To safeguard form that situation
use Encrypted Magic Folder.
A nice utility that can hide your folder or you can encrypt your
folder, so that no body can have access to it witout the password you entered
to encrypt the folder. Encrypted Magic Folders (EMF) provides automated
& transparent encryption! Simply select folders whose files
you want encrypted and EMF not only makes those folders and files completely
invisible to others but decrypts and encrypts the files automatically and
transparently as you use them. You won't even notice the encryption
as EMF does all the work behind the scenes. Access to your encrypted
files will be so normal and fast you'll probably forget you're using encrypted
files.
If you wish, you can establish
5 different accounts so everyone using your computer can create invisible
and encrypted folders only they have access to.
The method used to by EMF to
encrypt your folders is proprietary. It combines good security with
excellent speed. THERE IS NO BACKDOOR. If you forget your password
there is nothing we can do to decrypt your files. You can get the
latest version from
<http://www.PC-Magic.com>
There
are other very good encryption software like it (Another is Access
Denied 2.0
or
Folder Guard
)
which you can use for privacy puposes.
Another
issue we found recently from our readers emails and letters, that is how
to give password at the booting postion from bios so that no body can run
the computer without proper passoword.
You can give password in BIOS
(basic input output system) where you can enter by pressing F2 or Del key
when you first turn on your pc. Look for the message press "Del or F2"
to enter setup or bios. Once you enter the BIOS, look for BIOS FEATURE
SETUP, once you get in there, find "Security Option" : and make it 'Setup'.
To change a value, select it, and then press pageup or pagedown. Then Press
Esc to get out from there and find "User Password" , now press enter on
it and give the password. You have to confirm it again. Then select; Save
and Exit option. [ Here we discussed most common bios AWARD modular
Bios, but there are some other BIOS which have different setup. For that,
better see your motherboard manual. ]
Caution: BIOS is a very critical part
of computer and if you change anything which you don't have proper knowledge
of, then you run the risk of making you pc not to run properly. So don't
modify any value, if accidentaly you do so, then select "Exit witout Saving".
Also don't forget the password (so choose a simple one), if you forget
password you can't run your pc !! It's advisable for new users not to get
into BIOS, better tell someone more experienced to do it for you.
